Top Travel Guide To Samburu National Reserve Wildlife In Kenya
Samburu National Reserve is the most popular reserve in northern Kenya. Wildlife viewing is good, and most big safari animals are easily spotted. The arid environment is home to a variety of north Kenya species, both birds and mammals. A village visit to a nearby Samburu homestead is a worthwhile activity.
Location of Samburu National Reserve in Kenya;
Considered one of the famous safari destinations in East Africa, Samburu National Reserve is located in Samburu County in northern Kenya and is a premier Game Reserve situated on the banks of Ewaso Ng’iro River. On the other side of the River is Buffalo Springs National Reserve. The park is 165 km² in size. In the middle of the reserve, the Ewaso Ng'iro River flows through doum palm groves and thick riverine forests. It provides water, without which the game in this arid region could not survive.
Samburu National Reserve is very peaceful and attracts animals because of the Ewaso Ng’iro River that runs through it and the mixture of acacia, riverine forest, thorn trees, and grassland vegetation. The Ewaso Ng'iro flows from the Kenyan highlands and empties into the famous Lorian Swamp.
Wildlife animals in Samburu National Park;
Samburu Reserve is a unique wildlife conservation haven famous for an abundance of rare species of animals such as the Grevy zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, Gerenuk, and the Beira oryx. The Reserve is home to predators including Lions, Cheetahs, and African Leopards. There are over 900 Elephants within the Reserve, Buffaloes and Hippos, (Kamunyak, a lioness famous for adopting oryx calves also resides here).
Other mammals frequently seen in the Park include olive baboons, warthogs, Grant's gazelles, Kirk's dik-dik, impalas, and waterbucks. A black rhinoceros population was re-introduced into the park after an absence of 25 years due to heavy poaching. The Ewaso Ng'iro River also contains large numbers of Nile crocodiles.
Birding in Samburu National Park;
The Reserve is also a habitat for over 450 species of birds. These include grey-headed kingfisher, sunbirds, bee-eaters, Marabou stork, tawny eagle, Verreaux's eagle, bateleur, vulturine guineafowl, yellow-necked spurfowl, lilac-breasted roller, secretary bird, superb starling, northern red-billed hornbill, yellow-billed hornbill, and various vultures including the palm-nut vulture.
Another popular experience is the Samburu cultural tour, which allows visitors a fascinating insight into the unique way of life of the renowned Samburu people, a pastoralist and warrior tribe found in Kenya and other parts of East Africa.
Samburu as a wildlife ecosystem also comprises several conservancies and group ranches bordering the main Reserve such as the Kalam Conservancy, West Gate Community Conservancy, and Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy.
Samburu offers several notably exciting activities and one of the more thrilling of these is the safari game viewing and bird watching. The geography and climate of Samburu allow for quality wildlife viewing all year round. In addition, visitors enjoy nature walks, bush meals, camel trekking safaris, and sundowners.
Samburu National Reserve can be visited all year round but for Kenya Wildlife the long dry season from July to October is the best time to visit Samburu Reserve. You enjoy sunny, blue skies with almost no rain. Water sources are limited due to the absence of rainfall, so the animals congregate along the Ewaso River to drink and feed.
